Preparations – Before Surgery

Pre-Operative Assessment and Diet

You will attend a Pre-operative Assessment Clinic approximately four weeks before your operation date for various tests where you will be given a diet sheet for your liver shrinkage diet to be started two weeks before your operation.

Other Preparations

You will need to think through the implications of your hospital stay and recovery and prepare your personal arrangements.  This may include:

  • Telling your friends and family
  • Transport to and from the hospital
  • Childcare
  • Time off work
  • Arranging any support at home after you return

Admission

You will come into hospital (sometimes called your admission) on the day of surgery and will have a pair of anti-embolism socks (like tight stockings) to wear to prevent blood clots forming. You will walk down to theatre where the anaesthetist will see you before or on the morning of surgery.
