BMI Weight Loss Advice

Your BMI is a really good indicator of which weight loss programme would be most suitable. However, this is only a guide.  Any individual recommendation would be made after a full review of your medical history and an examination by a bariatric surgeon.   Call us to book your private consultation,

< 19 – Underweight

  • You are not a candidate for weight loss management and should allow your weight to increase to reach a healthy BMI

19 – 25 – Healthy weight

  • You are not a candidate for weight loss management

25 – 30 – Overweight

  • There is a low risk to your health.
  • A little weight loss through diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes would help.  You may consider the gastric balloon to help reduce your appetite so that you eat less and lose weight without surgery

30 – 35 – Moderately obese

  • You have an increased risk of developing weight-related health issues such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholerterol, arthritis, asthma, sleep apnoea and several cancers
  • You may be a candidate for obesity surgery.  The gastric band is recommended for BMI over 30

35 – 40 – Severely Obese

  • With this BMI you have a significant risk of developing weight-related health issues as outlined above
  • You may be a candidate for obesity surgery and could consider the gastric band or gastric sleeve

40 – 50 – Morbidly Obese

  • There is a very high risk of obesity-related conditions
  • You are almost certainly a candidate for obesity surgery.  Your Surgeon may recommend the band, sleeve or gastric bypass to manage your weight

50+ – Super Obese

  • This is a potentially life threatening obesity.  Patients in this category usually have a number of weight-related health problems
  • Your Surgeon may recommend the band, sleeve or gastric bypass to manage your weight
  • Severely obese patients are sometimes advised to have the gastric balloon to lower their weight as a safety measure in advance of a surgical procedure such as the gastric band or bypass
